Between the constellations of Sun Ra and Miles Davis, Restroy has claimed a corner of the universe. On its self-titled debut album, the group explores the far-out possibilities of a sextet. placing electronics alongside acoustic instruments, and wrenching all the potential sounds from that combination.

It is pulsating, vibrant, profoundly organic in texture. That's Dammann's signature, brown propulsive rhythm as a ground, allowing for other instruments, (notably trumpet and keyboards) to swell and ebb. Ra's drumming is bifurcated between irresistible driving figures and commentary that subliminally interjects. This is music so personal and intimate that any attempt to classify it by genre misses the point entirely.

Mr. Dammann’s contrabass is at the center of most of these pieces, tapping and plucking the strings like they were a part of an ancient ceremony or ritual. He is a most gifted bassist who deserves to be heard elsewhere.…..

The combo’s amalgamations of acoustic and electronic textures scratch the same itch as Rob Mazurek and Chad Taylor’s Chicago Underground Duo without ever sounding like an imitation….

Certainties are sought in the midst of doubts. One seeks serviceable words to explicate music comprising familiar constituents, but often it’s preferable having the music itself, its temperament at least, dictating what we should learn….
